Milan

Milan

Hello. Today we´ve prepared one special article for you. It is special because it includes a short interview with someone who has recently visited Milan. If you like this concept, it won´t be the last article with an interview.

Milan – the city of fashion, beauty, luxury, and sport

Milan is the second-largest city in Italy. This place is associated with fashion, luxury, and shopping, which is the reason why it´s called the City of Fashion. However, it isn´t just about shopping for luxurious goods, but also about exploring new places, sights, and attractions that this destination offers. There is definitely a lot to do for people who like cultural and sporting events.

How can you get there?

The easiest and most convenient option is definitely to travel by plane. Traveling by plane will save you a lot of time and most importantly, you don´t have to drive by car. However, it´s up to you whether you choose a 2-hour flight from Vienna or Bratislava, or you decide to travel by car. The journey by car takes approximately 11 hours.

Transportation

The city has a huge international airport and two smaller airports from which you can easily get by bus or subway to different parts of the city. Public transport consists of four metro lines, a tram network (almost 260km), and about 100 bus and trolleybus lines. It is also possible to use the railway network – 5 main railway stations and several smaller ones.

Sport

There are many sports that are famous in Italy, such as Formula 1 (there are several well-known circuits and the most famous team – Ferrari), or winter sports, such as skiing. The most famous sport in Milan is football. There are two football clubs, AC Milan and FC Internazionale Milan. In 2026, Milan will host the Winter Olympic Games.

Interesting facts

  1. Milan is considered the capital of fashion and that´s why many famous fashion brands such as Versace, Prada, Gucci, Armani, and Dolce and Gabbana are based here.
  2. Many people not only from Italy want to work in Milan because there are the highest salaries in all of Italy.
  3. The tram network is one of the longest in Europe.
  4. It´s considered the economic capital of Italy because several major banks and institutions are located there.

The most famous monuments and sights

Arco Della Pace

Duomo di Milano

This cathedral is the most famous monument in the whole city and it´s clear that your trip wouldn´t be complete without visiting it. The cathedral was built up to 500 years, which is why you can see elements of different styles from different periods in architecture. Inside the cathedral, there are many relics and objects. It´s the third-largest church in Europe.

If you want to avoid a lot of people, it´s good to visit the cathedral in the morning. After your morning visit, try to have breakfast or a good coffee in one of the Italian cafés located nearby. You won´t regret it.

Museo Civico di Storia Naturale di Milano

The big apple of Milan

It is a huge sculpture – a white Apple with a bite that has been repaired with steel stitching by Michelangelo. It had been donated to the city of Milan in honor of the food and nourishment-themed Expo of 2015.

Interview

With the help of Veronika, who also has her own blog (https://www.lovinlivin.eu/), we´ve answered some of the most common questions.

Is it worth going to Milan only for the weekend or would you recommend going there for longer?

In my opinion, 2-3 days in Milan are absolutely perfect. It is a beautiful city, but I can’t imagine what I would do there and what places I would visit if I spent more time there. In those 3 days you can see the whole city and see all its interesting sights and places.

Which place is worth visiting? Why?

So definitely the most famous and most beautiful building in the city, the Duomo. It is a huge massive building, which with its details really inflames everyone who passes by. Some tourists only look at this monument from the outside and do not know what beauties are hidden inside it. I would also recommend Rooftop, because there is a beautiful view of the entire Plazza del Duomo.

Another beautiful landmark is definitely Arco della Pace, located on a small square. Victor Emmanuel II Gallery is a gallery that resembles a luxury shopping mall. If you love luxury goods, this place is definitely for you.

What do Italian restaurants look like? Have you tried any Italian specialties?

Italian cuisine is my favorite! Even though their national dish is pizza and pasta, the Italians have one of the healthiest cuisines in the world. This is mainly due to seafood specialties. I’m not into seafood, but I couldn’t leave without trying a real Italian pizza, which can’t even be compared to ours. However, my favorite Italian dessert is Cornetto. It is similar to a croissant, but is softer, more delicious and contains less butter. It is filled with various flavors. I liked the apricot, chocolate and nut flavors the most.

Is Milan an expensive holiday destination?

Milan is definitely more expensive, mainly because it is a well-known, highly visited prestigious city. Personally, I expected it to be more expensive. Transportation by public transport will cost you around € 5, but it depends on the distance. One dinner will cost you € 12 on average, you can get accommodation per night from € 20-50. I recommend dealing with accommodation via Booking or Airbnb, because it is cheaper on these websites. When it comes to airline tickets, you can really buy cheap airline tickets at this time. Ours also cost 15 €. The whole trip for 3 days and 2 nights cost us around 130 €, which I think is a great price!
